I never thought that the beginning of 2017 for video games would be so terrifying. So horribly bad. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard not only failed to live up to my expectations of a return to the series’ roots, but also disappointed with its mediocre execution in almost all its aspects. This is a terribly predictable game with uninteresting mechanics, tired templates and a completely stupid explanation of the continuity of this game to the Resident Evil series.

As you know, Shinji Mikami, the man who led the creation of the first and fourth parts, left the series. New people took his place, whose task was to restart the franchise after the somewhat unsuccessful sixth part. They took a course towards modern trends in the video game industry in the horror genre, taking with them several essentially insignificant elements remembered by players from the universe of past games. I’m not at all happy with what they ended up with and I’ll try to explain to you why.

A return to some such origins, and?

I really don’t know where this game got all these nines, tens and recommendations for players to buy from the press and major publications. Either Capcom has so many suitcases, or everyone has suddenly become a shit eater. Journalists in the West write about it that it is a modern approach to the horror genre, that it is like a drop-dead fourth part with its fun gameplay and variety of locations, game situations, types of opponents, weapons and so on and so forth. This is all such bullshit that at first I simply couldn’t find the words to describe my frustration. By the way, since we’re talking about battles, I must say that this game pleases with the variety and quantity of its arsenal. There are flamethrowers, shotguns, pistols, bombs with a detonator, and even a machine gun, which towards the end of the game will give you more than 200 rounds of ammunition and force you to fight off a dozen typical identical vomit monsters. This is exactly what we all expected from the new series, isn’t it?? Rhetorical question of course.

There are also boss battles here. They are played by members of the Baker family. It was especially interesting to fight with two of them. In my opinion, this is probably the best thing about this game, especially the second boss and the penultimate one in the game, which transform into creepy nasty monsters and in these moments when I fought with them, I had a lot of fun. It’s a shame, but with the rest of the content in this game everything is not so good.

Of course, for the role of the main villain, the game developers took a creepy girl with long black hair, who carries a curse, because who else could they take into a game so strongly aimed at a modern Western audience?? I already feel sorry for the girl from Zvonok. Leave the poor thing alone! She’s a human too, after all. Well, I misbehaved a little in the past, a prank on the phone, big deal. Okay, seriously, this is really annoying. Like, we’re Japanese, we have a Japanese game, so here’s this poor thing for you in another horror story. Enough! Just enough, okay?
